Temple Sinai -- Put Loved Ones to Work (PLOW)

Temple Sinai is developing a program enabling family and friends to put their loved ones to work. This program will place young adults on supervised internships. Graduates can expect to have obtained;

  • Real work experience

  • Time management skills

  • Money management skills

  • Job seeking skills

  • Resume writing skills

As background, my wife and I financially supported our son for several years after he completed school. As with many other families we know, we wished our son would get a job. We knew that once working, he would do great! We knew he would be dependable, reliable, and very hard working. We knew employment would give him the confidence he needed to be successful. We had no doubt that once he was on the job, his self-esteem would improve, and other jobs would surely be easier to find. As parents, our ability to tell him what to do, how to find work, and how to convince employers to hire him was extremely limited. There are many people we know who find themselves in this same position. We would gladly have given the funds we used to support him to the Put Loved Ones to Work (PLOW) Program and have our son become a PLOW Associate and have the program put him to work!

At PLOW, all workers are referred to as Associates. We want all our workers to know that their success is our success and vice-versa. We also believe that every worker, regardless of experience, benefits from mentorship – someone who knows how and when to be supportive as well as how and when to push. We refer to these mentors as Employment Mentors.

PLOW will ensure that Associates have the technical and soft skills needed to work. Through its Personal Advisor Program, PLOW will work with Associates, find them internships, monitor their progress and satisfaction, pay them for time worked, and hopefully find contracts for them or permanent placement.

Contact us if you financially support a loved one and want to see them work. We will ask you and our potential Associate to complete our online application form. This will give us basic information about his/her strengths, weaknesses, education, and work history. We will assign an Employment Mentor. We will meet with you, our potential Associate, and the Employment Mentor to develop and agree upon a Plan. The Plan will clearly state the roles and responsibilities of each party. It will include the wage per hour you want PLOW to pay as well as what constitutes ‘work’. ‘Work’ may include attending class, preparing resumes, attending staff meetings, meeting with Employment Mentor, performing job searches as well as doing internship work itself. Please note we pay Associates weekly. We will bill you monthly in advance for the estimated wages we expect to pay the Associate plus 25% plus any classes, workshops, or counseling sessions we all agree upon.

Contact us if you can take an intern, other than your loved one, for up to 90 days. We’re looking for businesses, organizations, agencies, and individuals that can provide our Associates with meaningful work experience, on-the-job supervision, and honest and direct feedback. There is no obligation to hire the Associate, but for those Associates that do well for you, any assistance with job searchesise welcomed!

If you can be an Employment Mentor for one of our Associates other than your loved one, contact us. If you have mentoring experience, understand the disability experience, and a desire to help individual(s) obtain meaningful employment, we need you! We especially need you if you are good at finding paid or volunteer work for people with disabilities. Please complete the Employment Mentor Application form on our website. We’ll screen all applications, check references and do background checks as appropriate. We’ll then match you with Associates and invite you to a planning meeting. As a token of appreciation, and to provide you with a small stake in the game, each Employment Mentor will receive a monthly stipend equal to 5% of their Associate wages

Please let me know if you have any questions.
